Acton UK Tube Station: Connected to the Rest of Greater London

3 February 2012

Greater London is the main urban area in the United Kingdom. It is a little over 1,500 km2 and has a population of around 8,000,000 people. To transport this multitude, The London Underground, also known as the Tube, or even The Underground was built. It currently, has 270 stations and 11 lines to serve these stations.

Acton, located in the London borough of Ealing, is one of the districts of Greater London served by the Tube. There are 4 tube stations in Acton: North Acton, East Acton, West Acton, and Acton Town tube stations. The first three stations are on the Central Line.

North Acton tube station was built early in the 1900s and is located between the East Acton and Hanger Lane tube stations, and is based on Victoria Road. Facilities on the station include phone booths, vending machines, toilets, and photo booths.

East Acton tube station was opened in 1920 and is located between White City and North Acton tube stations, it is based on Erconwald Street. This station has available phone booths, but not much else.

West Acton Tube Station is an intermediate station and is close to North Ealing Tube Station which is on the Piccadilly Line. The station is on Queens Drive, and the facilities include phone booths, vending machines, and toilets.

Unlike North, East, and West Acton tube station, Acton Town tube station serves the Piccadilly and District Lines. It is the oldest Acton tube station, having been opened in 1879. This station is located at the junction of Gunnersbury and Bollo Lanes. The London bus route E3 stops outside the station, just as the night bus N11 does. In addition, it is within walking distance from the South Acton railway station which is on the London Overground. Facilities on the station include phone booths, vending machines, toilets, photo booths, and lifts.

The Tube is currently being renovated to improve service, capacity, and safety. In fact, some lines and stations are closed during the weekends for this work. For the first three months of 2012, the Acton stations affected by the renovations on the Central Line are: January 21st, between North Acton and Ealing Broadway; March 10th-11th, between Marble Arch and West Ruislip/Ealing Broadway; and March 24th-25th, between White City and West Ruislip/Ealing Broadway. For the Piccadilly Line, the renovation schedule is on January 28th-29th, affecting the line and stations between Acton Town and Uxbridge. For the District Line, the renovation is scheduled on January 28th-29th and there will be no service between Earl's Court and Ealing Broadway/Richmond.
