Airline Bomb Hoaxer Gets Three Years

8 April 2011
A man terrified of flying has been jailed for three years today for making a hoax bomb threat on an Etihad Airways flight in January this year.  James Glen pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier today before being sentenced to three years behind bars.

Mr Glen was returning to the UK after spending 18 years in Australia and had drunk heavily to aleviate his fear of flying.  Despite his state of mind, the cabin crew and other passengers took his claims seriously forcing the crew to initiate security procedures culminating in two scrambled RAF Typhoon jets escorting the plane to Stansted airport where security procedures were carried out.

A statement released by Chief Inspector Graham Stubbs shows the force has little sympathy for Mr Glen who was originally born in Scotland.  "Although this was probably a one-off act of drunken stupidity, Glen's actions caused a large number of people a great deal of anxiety and inconvenience, as well as wasting a considerable amount of public and private money," he said.

Mr Glen's actions couldn't have come on a worse day as on the same day, there had been a suicide bomb attack at Moscow airport.  The term of the sentence has raised questions from some about sentencing being proportionate to the crime, however authorities have been quick to point out that they are meant to deter other travellers from not taking flight security seriously.
