Heathrow Airport Becomes Official London 2012 Olympic Games Sponsor

4 September 2011

Heathrow is now officially the host airport for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.  As a result of the deal announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games or LOCOG, Heathrow becomes the 42nd domestic sponsor and an official supplier to the Games in London next year.

With or without this sponsorship deal, Heathrow was always going to be the most popular airport during the Games being the UK's flagship airport anyway, however now the BAA-owned airport can use the Olympic logos and other promotional material as well.

From athletes to spectators, and officials to sponsors and members of the world's media will be welcomed by Heathrow.  In fact it is estimated that around 80% of people arriving for the Games will come through Heathrow.  On the day after the Games close in London, officials expect Heathrow to have its busiest day ever, with over 218,000 bags leaving the airport, thats over 35% more than on its previous busiest ever day.

"We are tremendously proud to be the host airport of the London 2012 Games. Heathrow will be the first and last impression of the London 2012 Games for thousands of people. London 2012 will be Heathrow’s greatest challenge. Every part of the airport is working together so we can give the world’s greatest athletes the world’s greatest welcome", said BAA Chief Executive Colin Matthews.
