What used to be an airfield for military use is now London’s primary gateway: Heathrow Airport. Most travelers who fly to the United Kingdom touch down at Heathrow Airport, 22 km west of Central London. Thanks to the interconnected transportation and the old allure of Europe, London Heathrow Airport is also the entry point of tourists who want to tour neighboring countries making this facility the third busiest airport in the world.
Ninety commercial airlines ferry people to and from about 170 destinations all over the globe. Heathrow Airport welcomes some 67 million passengers every year. Eleven percent of these are bound for the UK; 43% of these travel short-haul and 46% are long-haul international travelers.
Heathrow Airport features two parallel runways and five passenger terminals strictly following international aviation standards. It also boasts of excellent security guarded by the aviation unit of the Metropolitan Police. When high security is required, the Household Cavalry and the army are deployed to make the facility even safer. Finally, high-tech and full body scanners are used to screen passengers and their luggage.
One of the nice features of this facility is its convenient transport links although each terminal is as complete as any airport can get. Terminals one to five each have places for currency exchange, information gathering, customer service and left luggage. Passengers really only need to move around to switch flights. For those long airport waits, there are places of worship in Heathrow Airport including an Anglican, Catholic, Free Church of Scotland, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh chaplains in addition to St. George's Interdenominational Chapel.
The fastest way to Heathrow Airport is by train which runs every 15 minutes from this facility to London Paddington although it may take a bit longer for Terminals 4 and 5 which are farther. It’s not at all a long journey but if you do need some peace and quiet, the train has a Quiet Zone carriage. First class seats are great too because they provide extra legroom and tables to work at.
You may catch trains between 05:10 and 23:25 from Paddington; they run between 05:07 and 23:42 from Heathrow. Tickets can be purchased online, at the station itself or even on board the train at about £18 and £32 for round trips.
Of course, you could always take the car rental option for more privacy and convenience. It should be easy to get a car at Heathrow airport and it is also possible to pre-arrange this online.
