Heathrow, Stansted & Glasgow See a 0.9% Rise in Traffic

13 April 2011

During the month of March, passenger numbers increased by 0.9% across all of BAA's airports.  The three Scottish airports saw the biggest rise at 5.8% to 1.5 million passengers.

Heathrow numbers also rose by 2.3pc to 5.3 million, though Stansted and Southampton saw a fall in their traffic by 7.4 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively.  Southampton Airport's numbers were 130,000 and Stansted's were 1.4 million during March.

BAA's Chief Executive, Colin Matthews said ""In the UK, consumer confidence remains fragile, affecting airports up and down the country. Continued rises in the price of oil are a concern for airlines and passengers in all our markets."  Heathrow's solid performance and good growth in BAA's Scottish airports meant that the natural disasters in Japan and unrest in the Middle East and Africa has only affected traffic numbers modestly, probably due to fewer passengers going to those destinations anyway.

The other two airports in BAA's portfolio are the real concern, though as the economy picks up, they should both benefit significantly from the expected increase in leisure holidays.
