You may have left your phone in the back of a taxi on a night out, but imagine how you'd feel if you'd left $50,000 in cold hard cash instead? You'd probably think that you'd never see that money again. Well not if your driver had been Nigel Lipscombe from Cambridge.
Nigel found the rucksack containing $50k, 1000 Euros and a laptop in the back of his taxi cab after dropping off a Middle Eastern passenger on 16th April at around 8pm. In fact, it was his next passenger that alerted him to the bag as he got in. After taking him to his destination, Nigel promptly pulled up at Parkside police station to hand the bag in.
On his way into the station, he bumped into the bag's owner, who had just come into the station to report his missing property. He was overjoyed and handed Mr. Lipscombe a $200 (£120) reward. They went back into the station together to notify the police that the bag had been returned after which Mr. Lipscombe gave the man a lift to the pub in return for a further $100 (£60) tip. Although he had not looked in the bag prior to handing it in, he was aware there was a laptop inside due to its shape and what felt like other documents. It was only when the bag was handed back did Nigel realise there was a lot of money in it. But he insists that had he known, he would still have handed it in because as a father-of-two, he values his integrity too much to do something like that.
Mr. Lipscombe became the hot topic of conversation amongst the other taxi drivers in the area and throughout the UK. Many fellow drivers felt it was a welcome story and proves that not all cabbies are out there for the next buck and to rip people off.
Now that certainly is a memorable taxi journey - one that neither the driver nor the passenger will be forgetting any time soon.
