How to Hail a London Cab

If this is your first time in London, here are a few tips on how to hail and get into the famous London taxi or cab. It is quite an interesting experience to be able to stop one of these black, iconic cabs which have become one of the great features of London.

To hail a cab, first look to see if the 'TAXI' light is turned on. This will tell you that the cab is up for hire. Next, simply put your arm out to stop the cab and once the driver sees you, he will pull over. Do take note where you stop the cab as the drivers will not stop at pedestrian crossings or spots that will be hazardous to other road users.

Once the driver has stopped for you, talk to him at the front window and explain where you wish to go before getting into the back of the cab. A typical London black cab can seat five people; three persons on the back seat and two more opposite, on the fold down seats. The wide windows in these cabs will give you a resplendent view of the buzzing city as the driver winds in and out of the busy, famous streets of London.

Incidentally, London black cabs cost more simply because all drivers have acquired The Knowledge. This means they have taken the trouble to study and memorise the 25,000 London streets that are located six miles within Charing Cross. It takes about two to four years to obtain The Knowledge and it is very often regarded as getting a university degree in 'London'. As the passenger, you will benefit by getting to your destination using the shortest and most convenient route.

There is a minimum fare of £2.20 at any time and generally fares are calculated based on the time of day, distance and how fast the driver is travelling. Fares tend to be higher after ten at night and on public holidays. To simplify your search for a taxi and to obtain an online quotation, you could try the more common minicab companies in London.  Licensed by Transport for London as well, minicabs are the lesser known alternative to the black taxis.  They are privately owned and have to adhere to strict rules as well and can be used for all journeys from Heathrow airport transfers to journeys into London.
