Norwich Black Cabs To Be Cut

30 March 2011

There are currently 217 black cabs currently operating in Norwich.  If the local trade association are to be believed, this is far too many for the amount of work available.

The Norwich Hackney Carriage Trade Association have tabled a proposal to the council to restrict the number of cabs that are licensed.  There will be a meeting to discuss this issue on the last day of March this year, however the council is being urged not to simply put a upper limit on the number of licences that can be granted but to instead achieve their objectives through different means.

There are rumours that rules on the age of the vehicle or meeting some exhaust emmissions standards may come into force, thereby not only cutting the number of black taxis on the roads, but also helping to align themselves with the European Union directives on emissions.

There are also 335 minicabs or private hire cars on licenced by Norwich Council, however these are not going to be subject to this review at this time.
