Continental Airlines will be introducing paperless boarding at Heathrow airport. The service will be available on non-stop flights from the UK to the US.
Passengers will receive boarding passes straight to their mobile phones or PDA’s. It comes as a response to a growing demand by passengers to fly without paper boarding passes.
This is the latest change in a number of new initiatives introduced at Europe’s largest airport. The electronic boarding pass will be received as a two dimensional barcode, which can be read by security checkpoints and also at the boarding gate.
Not only will it become quicker and easier for passengers to board, but security will also improve as passes cannot be manipulated or duplicated, preventing fraudulent activity. The mobile pass service also enables passengers to access flight information, track their flights, and view services available onboard as well as standby lists. Paperless boarding will be favoured by environment concerned individuals, as it is a greener option.
Paperless boarding was first trailed by Continental Airlines in the US, and after its success there it is now being expanded to Heathrow. The service is currently available at 42 airports, but Heathrow will be the first one in the UK.
Martin Hand Continental’s Vice President of Reservations and Ecommerce said: "We are pleased to add Heathrow to the growing list of airports we serve with mobile boarding passes. Customers have told us this is the type of product improvement they want and we will continue to expand the self-service technology to more of our domestic and international destinations.”
Continental Airlines announced that flights from Heathrow to New York and Houston, where the passes will be used, are set to expand. With plans to add two more daily flights to New York, bringing the total number to seven.
